It is derived from Hassia, the Latin word for the state of Hesse (Heavy Ion Research Center in Darmstad) where it was discovered in Germany. It is also known by the names eka-osmium and uniloctium (Uno), provisionally given by the International Union of Applied Fundamentals and Chemistry.
