Etymology

Description

It is a colorless, odorless and gaseous element in the 16th group of the periodic table. In addition to being the most abundant element in the earth's crust, it also makes up 20.8% of the atmosphere. When used for industrial purposes, it is separated from liquid air by fractional distillation. It is used in high temperature welding and breathing. In its common form, it is in the form of oxygen, but it is found as ozone in the upper atmosphere. It was discovered by Priestley in 1774.

Language Of Origin

Greek via French

Origin Of Word

It comes from the combination of the Greek word oxy-, meaning both 'sharp' and 'acid', and the suffix -gen. It means "acid-making".

Meaning

make acid

Etymological Description

It comes from the Greek expression oxy geinomai, meaning "I make acid", as it is believed to be the basic building block of acids. The phrase later evolved into the French oxygène, which is the source of the English phrase "oxygen" today.

Production & Use

Sources

It is mainly obtained by fractional distillation from liquid air. The amount of traces is determined by electrolysis of water in a laboratory environment or by heating potassium chlorate (KClO3) with manganese dioxide (MnO2).

Uses

It is used in steelmaking, welding and life support. Ozone (O3), naturally occurring in the upper atmosphere, protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation.
