Etymology

Description

It is a radioactive and transactinide element. It is thought to have similar chemical properties to hafnium. Rf-260 was discovered in 1964 at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna (USSR). Researchers at Berkeley discovered the isotopes Unq-257 and Unq-258 in 1964.

Origin Of Word

From chemist and physicist Ernest Rutherford

Etymological Description

This name was given in honor of Ernest Rutherford, who developed the Bohr model of the atom. Rutferfordium is also known as kurchatovium (Ku), in honor of Igor Vasilevich Kurchatov, who contributed to the understanding of the uranium chain reaction and the nuclear reactor. Unilcadium was used as the temporary systematic name.

Production & Use

Sources

It is obtained by bombarding californium-249 with carbon-12 and 13 particles, which form isotopes with half-lives of more than 3 and 4 seconds.

Uses

It has no significant commercial use.
