Etymology

Description

It is a soft silvery metal element belonging to the lanthanide series. It has six natural isotopes that are stable and 12 known artificial isotopes. It is used as a neutron absorber in nuclear technology. Other areas of use are also being investigated. It was discovered by Carl G. Mosander in 1843.

Etymological Description

It is named after the town of Ytterby in Sweden, where high concentrations of yttria and erbium oxide are found. After 1860, the element known as terbia was renamed erbia, and after 1877, the element known as erbia was renamed terbia.

Production & Use

Sources

It is found together with the heavier rare earth metals xenotime and euxenite.

Uses

Erbium oxide is used to obtain pink glaze in ceramics. It is also valued as an alloying agent for other exotic metals, with several uses in the nuclear industry. For example, it increases the formability of vanadium.
