It is a hard, white transition metal. It is found with platinum. It is used as a catalyst in some platinum alloys. It is soluble in molten alkalis and is not attacked by acids. It reacts with halogens and oxygen at high temperatures. In 1844 K.K. Isolated by Klaus.
