Description
It is a semi-metal element found in group 15. It has three allotropes: yellow, black and grey. It reacts with halogens, concentrated oxidizing acids and hot alkalis. Albertus Magnus is thought to be the first to isolate the element in 1250.
Language Of Origin
Syriac/Persian through Greek, Latin, Old French and Medieval English
Origin Of Word
From the English word (arsenicum in Latin)
Meaning
orpiment, zırnık
Symbol Origin
Hynanka of males
Etymological Description
Originally from the Greek word arsenikon, meaning "yellow zirnik", taken from Syriac (al-zarniqa) and Persian (zarnik). Arsenikon is related to the Greek arsenikos, meaning "masculine" or "strong". These words evolved into Latin arsenicum and Old French arsenic, which is the source of today's English word arsenic.
